It's here! Right now! Kinda snuck up on you eh?

TORRENT: http://damagedgoodz.net/torrents/mglna02.torrent

This episode features two changes, one permanent and one on a trial basis.

1) OP/ED lyrics have been turned off by default. They are now included in the second subtitle track (the one titled Lyrics+Dialogue) and will be from here on out. All you need to do is flip over to that track once at the beginning of the episode if you really want to see them. As before, there is also an unstyled subtitle track for you custom font junkies and those using that VLC crap.

2) We're trying out Vorbis audio. This change shouldn't really affect anyone since FFDshow has a vorbis audio decoder (which is what you have if you're using CCCP). If you don't have FFDshow, you can always install the decoder from http://www.illiminable.com/ogg/oggcodecs_0.71.0946.exe if your player doesn't already support it (just try playing the episode and see if it works, apparently lots of groups use vorbis so you should be set).

Enjoy! As usual, comments specific to this episode can go here, or feel free to start a new thread with discussion or something.

v2 and Season 1 batch torrent info (31)

1 Name: JJS«admin » : 2006-10-28 17:10 ID:+pBAL5rB (Image: 708x1000 jpg, 144 kb) [Del]

src/1162073433751.jpg: 708x1000, 144 kb
Alright this is how the season 1 batch is going to work.

Step 1: I have updated the scripts for episodes 1-6 and corrected a couple typos, as well as update the subtitle styles to more or less match the rest of the series. I have NOT re-encoded the video or audio, but I did flag eps 1-4 as having SBR AAC which won't affect anybody except there's a very slim chance it might fix the problem with audio lag for people using CoreAAC.

Step 2: I am in the process of generating binary patches for the changed episodes. Because these changes are only to the script, the patches are on the order of 10-30kb per episode. They are being generated with XDelta 1.1.3 which is an open source binary patcher available for both Linux, Mac OSX and Windows. Linux users can probably get it from their favorite package manager (apt-get install xdelta on Ubuntu) and OSX users can probably get it via Fink. The Windows executable will be included with the release.

Step 3: Prior to the batch torrent release, I will release a zip file containing the patches, the windows version of xdelta, and a set of Windows and Linux batch scripts that will take care of all the leg work for you. You'll just need to extract the zip into the directory and run the appropriate batch file. The script will take care of making the proper directory and placing the patched files into it. Once that is finished, just move episodes 7-13 to the new directory and you'll be ready to help me seed (I'm really gonna need help on that one) :)

Step 4: After the patching and moving is complete, you can go ahead and delete the files you extracted.

Step 5: ????

Step 6: PROFIT!

For those of you who were waiting for the batch to even start downloading the series, none of this applies to you. Just download the batch torrent when it's released and enjoy!

I'll post both a torrent and direct download link for the patch when its ready. The patches have finished generating and it'll be a whopping 150kb download, plus size of batch scripts and xdelta windows executable. In the mean time, please make sure your filenames match the original ones from the torrents. There should not be any underscores in the filename and if there are, change them back to spaces. If you're able to fire up your torrent client and seed it, you're good to go.

Ok guys...um...help?
I'm having playback issues with this batch.
I know, I'm probably not looking in the correct place but I feel I should post it anyway. I hope I'm not the only one with this issue.

So, I downloaded the entire Nanoha batch, seeding right now.
The problem comes when I try to play ANY file from the batch.
Most notably ep 1v2 and ep 13.
As soon as the video is about to appear....windows XP reboots.
Just like that. Every single time.
It used to work before, but I dont know wether that was before or after I reinstalled XP.

I'm using the latest CCCP, clean installed. Latest Nvidia drivers and I have an XFX GF6200. Athlon XP2800+, 512 RAM, XP Pro, yaddayaddayadda.
I can play other MKV's fine but these nanoha eps seem to screw up my system.

Anyone have an idea where to start troubleshooting?

Humm they work just fine for me, what was the last error listed aroud the time of the reboot on your event log? Also try downloading the Insurgent from : http://www.cccp-project.net/ run it and post for help in there fourms. They know best.

Thats an excerpt from the beta Insurgent.

It SEEMS that the high sampling rate, possibly in combination with other factors, is making my soundcard(drivers) cry and die.
...hard.
I switched to another sounddevice(onboard) in Windows and I can play the file back fine.

what sound card were you useing? I know upto a week ago i had a SB Audgie 2ZS but i had to rma it. i dont recall haveing any problems back when i watched the oringal eps 1. I am useing on board now with out any porblems.

I was using a Terratec DMX Xfire 1024
I also tried reinstalling the drivers from their page(discont'd products) but to no avail.

I'm using the onboard chip that's integrated onto the Asus A7V600 mobo.

What I found WAS working with the Xfire, was forcing the FFdshow audio filter to resample anything above 48000 Hz down to 48000.
One of the CCCP guys recommended it. It works.
I switched back to the onboard card for now, I can use the Xfire at any time though.

Whoever's encoding might want to take these thigns into consideration. Or not, it's up to you :)

Well Nero Digital's AAC encoder is hereby nixed from the project. I just did 2 sample encodes, one with NDAAC and one with FAAC at the same settings. Upon playing the outputted mp4's directly from each encoder they both reported 48khz sampling rate like they were supposed to. BUT, after running them through mkvmerge and producing a pair of mkv files, the NDAAC mkv reported 96khz sampling rate upon playback while the FAAC mkv reported the correct 48khz rate.

In both cases they were encoded at the same bitrate and both set to AAC_LC. This is apparently a bug in ndaacenc which sets the wrong flags in its mp4 output (or maybe the SSE2 version only?). In any case, season 2 will be using FAAC's encoder. Feel free to toss some flaming spears in Nero's direction for me :)

Been watching some of the eps of your version of Lyrical Nanoha and other than a few typos, such as in ep 6 where jewel seed XIX is subbed as XIV, you've done a pretty good job. Of course, some of the mis translations most people won't catch, but that one was obvious (since it did show XIX on the jewel right before Fate said the number). Anyways, good work so far ^_^ (personally I don't mind styled subs, but as long as you can read them I'm fine).

(This post is very long, sorry)
Almost there...

It's currently re-encoding and then needs to go through one more round of QC. Like an EA Games product it's missing some previously announced features, but here's an abbreviated list of what you CAN expect to find in the release:

  • Clean OP: Yes, no text anywhere to be found with the exception of the translated show title (which I omitted last season) and The Triad's credit for me stealing their translation as well as our group name appears in the last 5 seconds (carefully integrated with the title so as not to look stupid (yes, it probably will still look stupid)).
  • 95% softsubbed: No more hardsubbed karaoke! Lyrics in romaji and their english translation are simple timed lines and can be turned off if you so desire. The only hardsubs are complicated ones like the show name and various signs scattered through the episode (things that fade or zoom which wouldn't work right in a certain portion of viewers without special configuration).
  • Multiple subtitle tracks: Related to the above in that there are TWO styled subtitle tracks. For the first episode the default track will contain both the OP/ED lyrics and the regular show dialogue. The second track will contain only the show dialogue for those that like things clean (like me). Starting with episode 02, the dialogue only track will become default so if you want to see the OP/ED lyrics, you'll need to switch to the second track in that case. ALSO there is an unstyled SRT subtitle track for you jerks trying to watch quality releases with the crap known as VLC. Please consider the CCCP http://www.cccp-project.net/ for playing back any anime in general. You'll be amazed how much more awesome styled subs look than the crap you see now in VLC (e.g. the lines of text layered atop one another with no regard for position tags). If you don't like CCCP you can achieve similar results with:

You linux folk would probably like MPlayer as I think with the very latest version they introduced a significant improvement to styled subtitle decoding.

Post too long. Click to view the whole post or the thread page.

hmm the _ mind games is a serious anime cliche that can sometimes really really annoy me attack dammit get it over with i say talk talk talk. being dedicated to a show is great the product that is turned out in the end is something that we as watchers always strive to find and enjoy. also this isnt a anime that is done over and over by 10 groups all changing a little bit so they can call it there own after 1 poor slub does allt he work. so we know here they will only be able to make theres less watchable. Nice and looking forward to it =).

About the "Rakete" thingy... well, you might want to know that in german there's only one word for missiles and rockets in the first place, so neither "rocket" nor "missile" would be wrong... well, if you don't wanna loose yerself in discussions about the targetting system that is, but that's really only possible in english ^_^, trust me i am german ;).

Oh... and to talk about the pros of unstyled subs: They're much easier to change to your personal tastes in matters of size and especially colour :P. Seen so many ill chosen white subs already...

Anyways, keep up the nice work b^_^b.

Yea, as mentioned above CCCP is really the only thing you should watch subbed anime with, it's much easier with subtitles and audio tracks. Also, with certain players the subtitles tend to run off of the screen cause they use their own font rather than the styled font in the coding. But yea, CCCP ftw!

Come on, you can do better than that. =)
With 132 kb/s for audio, you can retain much more than just 16 kHz.

Please give Vorbis a try.

(CCCP is redundant. ffdshow + Media Player Classic for the win!)

You're far too obsessed with upper frequency limits. The goal of these codecs is to throw out the information you wouldn't be able to pick up anyway.
Here's the spectromagnoarticulatorized analysis of ep 2 encoded with vorbis at Q=4 (same filesize as current AAC). If that extra 1.5khz of nearly inaudible fuzz is that important, I don't mind switching the drop-down box to vorbis instead of aac (actually I saved 3mb at Q=4). We're getting down to squeezing blood from a turnip here.

For the record, CCCP = ffdshow + mediaplayer classic (or zoomplayer). There is no redundancy there, it's just a convenient package of the two (and VSFilter which you really should be using instead of the version built into MPC, and Haali Media Splitter which you REALLY should be using instead of MPC's built in mkv splitter).

Subtitle problems (5)

1 Name: Seaotter : 2006-10-13 10:43 ID:Wd01Eczl [Del]

guys!
thanks for releasing Nanoha DVD!

now i have a problem.
i cant seem to see the subtitles for the eps.
using MPC with ffdshow.

help?

thx

2 Name: JJS«admin » : 2006-10-13 21:40 ID:zHK2a8L6 [Del]

If you installed MPC and ffdshow by themselves (i.e. not using CCCP) you can get MPC to handle the subtitles by going to Options->Playback->Output and setting DirectShow Video to either VMR7 Renderless or VMR9 Renderless.

Close the options and restart MPC. If there still aren't any subtitles go to the Play menu->Subtitles->Enable and they should automagically appear.

Your other option is to download VSFilter 2.37 from gabest's sourceforge site and follow the instructions HERE to install it properly. Inside the archive you downloaded there will be a folder called Release and Release Unicode. If you have Win2k/XP you should install the Unicode version, otherwise if you're still using Win98, UPGRADE YOUR DAMN OPERATING SYSTEM (or use the Release version instead). An advantage to using VSFilter over MPC's built in one is that you can leave the DirectShow Video option you changed earlier on Overlay, which can help quite a bit if you have a slower computer. On the other hand, MPC's built in subtitle filter looks a little sharper. My recommendation is to do the extra work and install VSFilter.

Of course you could just install the CCCP and it would install VSFilter for you and it might even work out of the box.

Because that's the most "official" romanization I've seen around. On the other hand I didn't change Arf to Alph or Asura to Arthra so I guess it mostly came down to which version I thought sounded most appropriate :)

In the interest of being consistent even if wrong, A's will maintain these same changes as the first eason.

If the changes are easy enough to distribute via the batch torrent (i.e. it doesnt' require re-downloading the entire episode), there will be v2's of a few episodes to make the script styles match and correct a few typos. The batch will contain these fixes.

Nanoha A's planning (8)

I suppose its a bit early to dig deeply into this, but I'd like to gather comments and suggestions for making season 2 thoroughly awesome. Plans so far include:

  • Per-character colored subs (Magical devices will use their own font, but not a unique one for each device. It was a pain in the ass finding two for RH and Bardiche and I still don't like them.)

  • Clean OP with karaoke similar to current season where its only the romaji and translation (I don't speak Japanese, let alone knowing kanji)

  • Same 230mb filesize as the latter half of S1. H264 main profile + 128k AAC at 640x480 resolution. I'm working directly from the DVD's this time so video quality might even get better at the same settings.

Once the current season is out and all is wrapped up, I'll get started on preparations for S2. This time there will be a fair amount QC involved to make sure I get this right from the first episode forward. If there's something that bugged you about S1, now's the time to make yourself heard!

2 Name: Kanna@The Triad : 2006-10-17 16:29 ID:SjQzeq/y [Del]

Don't fuck up. I'm watching you. If you care about my input though, I'd rather you keep the karaoke out. Just a suggestion :P

3 Name: chefetage : 2006-10-18 05:54 ID:Ijc5BqN6 [Del]

I dont know about the resolution. Are the DVDs really 640x480? I would keep the resolution 1:1 and Matroska supports this neat anamorphic feature too, if its required.

Different colors for each character sound good, but different fonts? I dont know.

Im no encoding freak but I'm a fan of the idea, if you already have the DVDs, do the best possible Rip. With coreavc and the newer ffdshow builds even h.264 HD material can be played on weaker machines so I expect the best possible encode ;)

And I dont really care about Karoke as long as it's not annoying.

Good luck with the new project. Im anticipating it :)

lol :) I generally find karaoke annoying too, but I figured if I did it rather simply at least I wouldn't get any complaints about it not being there at all. Ideally, I'd just softsub it and people could turn it off (or make the track without the karaoke the default one) but vsfilter sucks at simple effects like highlighting in real-time.
tl;dr - we'll see.
Is there any way I can construe this post as endorsement by the Triad? :D

>>3
The DVD's are standard 720x480 in 4:3 aspect ratio so for computer display a reduction to 640x480 is necessary to maintain that 4:3 ratio.
Frankly, the idea for a different font for the devices came from that damn screenshot I keep seeing of Bardiche saying "Yes, sir" in Triad's A's. I'd really like to keep that (although I haven't found the right font yet) just because it looks like what subtitled text from a computer should be (did that make sense?). I just need something computer-y or machine-ish, nothing extravagant and difficult to read.

Fonts? What fonts? VLC doesn't do fonts.

JJS, what I wanted to tell you on IRC was that I have a few fonts that are tech/computerish. I can send you some HTML previews of the packages, or I can send you the entire collections. They aren't big, under 2MB each. Contact me on IRC.

In case it might help out, the fonts that the Intelligent devices talk in are Lucida Console, in the fansubbing of Triad's Nanoha and Nanoha A's.

At least, I'm pretty sure that it is.

I've seen 720x480 (h.264) fansubbed animes and watched them on my monitor (1280x1024). There isn't a problem seeing them in their original resolution on a monitor whose aspect ratio is 4:3. It's like watching widescreen DVDs with black bars at the top and bottom of the screen. However, the only people benefitting from widescreen fansubbed animes are those with widescreen monitors though.

I wish I had a widescreen monitor. T_T

But either way will work.

IS FINISHED

Torrent will be posted tomorrow morning if I can find the time at work to remote desktop in and start it. Otherwise in the late afternoon. The link will be posted in this thread the moment it's up (although most of you will have found it via Tokyotosho or Baka-updates).

Feel free to discuss something in this thread or start a new one if you like.

The tracker was down yesterday/this morning. It has now returned with a good number of seeds on every torrent so you should be able to complete them now.

Gearing up for the end of the series, we have episode 10: "Everybody's Separate Heart-felt Vows." Encoding just finished, and pending a quick sanity check, you will find a torrent in this thread Thursday afternoon sometime.

(DVD version on right in image)
Now featuring more chainlink fence!

This episode packs a little less action and a lot more plot. The remaining episodes are thoroughly hardcore so keep watching!

I'm going to put off fixing this until the batch torrent at the end of the season. At that time I'll also bring the subtitle styles to a single set so everything looks consistent. This means a v2 for episodes 1-6.

It's not as bad as it sounds. To bring everyone's existing copies up to date you simply need to rename your existing files to match those of the v2 and start the batch torrent and the changed parts will be automagically updated with a minimum of download headache. I'll even post a shell script for both windows and linux that will take care of renaming the files for you. That way I at least have a chance for some help seeding the batch torrent when the time comes :)
