So I am in the middle of restyling the subs for the Nanoha series. I've decided to change the font colors for the main characters and Devices. I've also changed some fonts... Dialogue together with the OP-ED will use a single font, while Mid-Childa and Velka Devices will each use their own seperate font. I've already completed Season 1 and will continue to work on Season 2 later today.

Eto... I would also like to do Season 3 of the Nanoha series but since Season 1 and 2 are DVD releases... I'd like to stick with that and do the DVD version of Season 3.

About the changes to the fonts, I've decided to stick with the fonts that I originally extracted from the MKV files I downloaded from DGz.

If the admin "JJS" and users approve I'd be glad to forward my work to the group for revision. I hope everyone likes the idea... any comments, let me know.

An update... Season Two's style will be a bit different from Season One. Font colors will remain the same for the main characters and devices that were in Season One... new font colors will be assigned to the new main characters and devices for Season Two. Dialogue and OP-ED's will be using useing different fonts... Mid-Childa and Velka Devices will also be using different fonts.

Sounds awesome to me. I just have one question, though. If this is released, will it be a patch?

just send me the sub files if you want me to give them a look. If JJS/others approve for a patched release, I may be able make those patches. The process doesn't look very complicated, and I have free time and cpu power.

For episode 4 of Season Two... I was planning on adding a few subs. Well you know when Nanoha and Fate activate their upgraded deviced they start saying a few things that were not origionally there. Luckily they both speak English, so I do not need to worry about translation, I just hope I get the timing thing right. Wish me luck... ah wait that is if everyone doesn;t mind me adding it?

I don't think the extra subs are necissary. The two devices are just mumbling on about how they're activating and what not. Having to read that and pay attention to the important details that are actually being said by the characters could be a bit annoying.

As far as a patch? I don't think that'd be necissary either. If you just put all the sub files into a "subtitles" folder, and drop that into the folder with all the video files themselves, players like MPC will just pick them up automatically. That leaves the original subs there too, incase for whatever reason the new ones aren't wanted.

My two cents...

The site was down so I could not post any updates.

I've completed restyling the subs fo Nanoha Season 1 and 2. I also ran a spell check on all the subs, so 99.9% of all spelling mistakes have been corrected... well that is excluding any proper names and any words in ramaji. I will move on to the QC phase to snuff out anything I may have missed.

Once they are complete I will release the new subs... oh and I'll also start work on the subs for Season 3 of Nanoha.

Finally a reply...

Dreadnaught the main reason I am doing the restyling is for myself... I just thought it would be good to share it with anyone whom wanted colorful styles instead of the regular and almost colorless styles that are used. It is the people's choice wether they want the new subs or not.

That aside some people may wonder exactly what Raising Heart and Bardiche are saying at the time they've been upgraded... so I've added these subs as well. The patch may not be necessary but I myself wouldn't like having my subs seperate from the video files considering they are MKV containers and can hold these subs within. I would assume that the patch can install the subs without damaging the original MKV file or the subs that were previously within the MKV file... well there is no real loss with or without a patch.

Thanks very much... at first it was a bit difficult but after a few edits to the file with a text editor I've got the timing done quite perfectly... not bad for a first timer huh? In fact I am very happy with the results I've poduced in that episode!

Update time! I've completed QCing Season 1 and am now working on Season 2... in a day or so, I should have everything perfect and will release the newly styled subs them. Though that is another story... perhaps someone could tell me exactly how I can release them here?

HAHA if anyone is interested, I've even put off watching StrikerS just to get these done... well I do wanna start work on a template for StrikerS once I am complete Season 2.

Just my personal opinion on your restyles. Basing this off of episode 04 of A's.

Fate's, Shamal's, and Lindy's (and to a lesser extent Bardiche) borders don't really work that well. They blend with the white and make it hard to read.

Also the karaoke comes out like this in the pic. Not sure if that's intended or an error on my end. I do have the fonts installed.

i'am going to test the patch making process and make sure I know what I am doing with mkvtoolnix, but I don't think I will make all of the patches (yet). I would rather not have to make multiple patches if the ChanLokHang decides to modify them based on the recommendations of others.

I've done my best to get the borders the darkest as possible based on each characters hair color. Shamal's was most difficult... Bardiche speaks English so understanding what the device says is not all that difficult. I am visually impaired and could still read a bit over 99% of the subs therefore I do not believe I will be making any changes to any of the characters or devices colors.

Karaoke subs are green because well in both the first and second season there was not one character or device that used any green color... well Lindy came close but that was like an aqua color or something. I thought green was left out and decided to use it for the karaoke. As I've said before:

Season 1 subs are Dialogue and Lyrics.
Season 2 subs are Dialogue and Lyrics as well as Dialogue Only.

If you dislike the green you could use the subs for "Dialogue Only". Once again these subs were mainly done for myself thus I do not believe I will be making anymore modifications to them, please forgive my selfishness.

Season 1 karaoke color is blue.
Season 2 karaoke coloe is green.

Reply to Anon... there is nothing wrong with the player on your end, that is exactly how the subs should look for the karaoke.

5. Click "download from ..."
6. Use a zip program like 7zip to decompress the subtitles
7. Put the new files in the same folder as your DGz Nanoha DVD Rips
8. Make sure that the file names are exactly the same besides the file extensions ( Like: "Nanoha-01.mkv" and "Nanoha-01.ssa")
9. Use any Player besides Windows MediaPlayer or VLC
10. Somewhere in the player you can now change the subtitle stream

Work on styles for the third season has begun.... however, work on the subs will not begin for another few weeks. I have gotten the colors for the characters from the Japanese website rather then the TV rips of the series. Colors for the devices... hmmmm, that's another story, wish me luck! The fonts you see in season 1 and 2 will also be used for season 3 as I like consistency.

ok, I think I have everything figured out. I am going to make a patch that will modify the original DGz subs with the restyled subs as a the default subtitle track. The original subs will still be included as a secondary subtitle track.

Season 1 patch is made, I have not viewed every episode 100%, so if anyone wants to try it out come on over to #DGz or #Nanoha. The patch files total about 3.5MB and will create a new subdirectory with the modified files. Your originals won't be modified.

please let me know of any playback problems.

You did a pretty decent job with the styled subs over all, but I have a couple critisisms.

Firstly, the colour of Fate's (and other light-coloured subs) is too light, it makes it a little harder to read at times. The subs don't always have to match the hair-colour exactly.

Also, and I don't know if maybe you mentioned this before hand or not, but I saw some minor script changes too. Which isn't a big deal, but I just don't like surprises.

HAHAHA sorry sorry, guess I did forget to mention that huh? There were some minor script changes, however everything is still very understandable. I did mention before that the devices whom speak English... Raising Heart and Bardiche wlll be changed into what they are actually saying in comparison to what was translated before. All in all everything works out... please do not worry, criticism is fine with me as I am quite an easy going person.

I am not certain how the patch works, I manually remuxed all my MKVs. It would be best to ask the person whom made the patch.

I have started work a bit early for the Nanoha StrikerS Sub Restyling... taking the DVD release schedule into account, well assuming that the schedule listed in a previous thread will remain correct. Episode 1 looks pretty good. I'll go through the final check and QC tomorrow... ah I corrected Subaru's "Link Road" with "Wing Road" as I noticed it was changed in the recent releases I downloaded from Nanoha-DGz.

I am not sure how it is going to work since these are ripped from a TV source. The DVD source does not have the advertisement that was or is included with the TV source. My timing skills are not all that good, so I'll leave it up to someone more qualified to modify the restyled subs to match the DVD source.

Well, I am just about done restyling the subs for StrikerS. A list of the modifications I've made... quite a few so you may have to click on 'View Entire Post' or something. Here goes :

• There were quite a few spelling mistakes in the subs around ten or so... I've corrected them. One word that was spelled wrong is "Judgement"... it is actually "Judgment". Why I bring that particular word up is because I noticed it was also spelled wrong in the first two seasons of the Nanoha series as well and corrected them.
• The fonts which were used in the first two seasons of the Nanoha series are also being used in this third season.
• I've removed the Japanese text from the OP and ED of the subs for all the episodes, the reason being is because in the first two seasons of the Nanoha series there was no Japanese text in the OP and ED as well. I like consistancy so I hope no one minds.
• The positioning of some text was changed.
• All telepathic and electronic communications have been put in the 'italic' typeface.

Changes per episode :

• In episode one when Subaru is crying for her father and sister... it was seperated and timed correctly. The same was done when she cried about it hurting, being hot, and so on. This means the text will pop up one at a time instead of coming on all at once.
• In episode one when Subaru says "Link Road!"... I've changed it to "Wing Road!" to match how it was said not once but twice in episode five.
• In episode two when the report is being broadcast about the fire at the airport its position was changed and placed at the top instead of the bottom.
• In episode two when Hayate says "In short, we'll investigate anything to do with the Lost Logia, as well as other cases Headquarters gives us as well."... its position was placed at the top and size reduced. Why you ask... it is because she is speaking softly in the background while Tiana and Subaru are having a telephathic conversation which is spoken at a normal level.
• In episode two when Subaru is crying out "Ow ow ow ow ow! That hurts! That hurts! I give up! I give up! I give up!" not once but twice... I've place it at the top instead of the bottom, its size was reduced. Why you ask... I think it looks best there as Tiana has quite a lot to say to Subaru. It was added again and timed in when Subaru cries out a second time.
• In episode three when Tiana says "Fireball Shoot!"... I've changed it to "Variable shoot!". The reason being is because logically a Fireball Shot 'usually' has one path and target when fired. A Variable Shot could have its path and targets changed, if you've noticed when it was fired it changed its path quite friquently and once a target was destroyed it chose a new one. Well another reason is... during episode five Cross Mirage says "Variable Barrel". I'm assuming it is an adaptation of the Variable Shot Tiana used in episode three.
• I'm not sure if it is a spelling error but in episode five Subaru always said "Mach Calibre"... I've changed it to "Mach Caliber". I prefer the correct spelling in this case... hope no one minds.
• In episode five when Mach Caliber says "Because I was made to make you run stronger and faster." the position was changed to its normal position at the bottom of the Japanese text instead of being at the top. This was made possible due to minor font changes.

That's about it for the major changes... now it's question time! Who knows the names of the two people speaking at the end of the fifth episode? I know they are not very friendly people and may be enemies of Hayate and her squad. I am certain they will appear in future episodes so any information on these two people would be helpful as I need to make styles for them. Thanks very much! I must apologize, I didn't intend to release these subs until the DVD versions of Nanoha StrikerS started coming. However if the new subs are a must have for some folks then... I can post them here.

Before doing so I must have the admins premission... please remember that this third season is still being aired and worked on by Nanoha-DGz. Anyone could come here download these subs get the raws and call themselves a new group or whatever and start releasing them with subs which were not made by that particular group. Well, HAHA... I wouldn't want to get on the admins bad side or have them drop the project because of my lapse in judgment.

People can do that already anyway. It's easy to demux the subtitles from DGz's h.264 release and put them onto whatever raw you want. I do it with Moyism's semi-HD raws. I know it's upscaled, but there is a slight quality increase due to the dolby effect.

I thought I put instructions with the patch... you just have to unzip the file to the directory where the original DGz (season 1)releases are. Then double click the .cmd file (it is batch file (text), can be opened in notepad if you are curious as to what is in it).

It will apply each patch to the appropriate file and create a new patched version in a subdirectory called "Restyled"

You need the original DGz files to have their ORIGINAL names. No renaming is necessary.

This screen shot is a little guide on how to use the patch. I was too lazy to mess with the resolution, so it is kind of big, and you may have to scroll to look at all of it. (798x1105, 328KB)

I see, say there is no patch for Season 2 right? I was thinking of changing the OP and ED text colors from green to blue. Well... that depends if the patch is or is not out yet. If so then I will leave the subs as is, if not then I will re-release the subs for Nanoha season 2.

Now that I've gotten caught up with the Nanoha StrikerS season, each new episode 'h264' that is release from Nanoha-DGz will have its subs restyled and released a day later. However I still need JJS's permission to release the restyled subs for the Nanoha StrikerS season... upon his approval I will release what I have now and restyled subs for each newly released episode for everyone.

If you need the fonts for the Nanoha StrikerS season you will need to download the subs which were restyled for Season 1 and 2 as the fonts are already in that compressed file.

Season 2 Patch IS available - but will be revised with new colors for the OP/ED. The v2 patch will still use the original DGz release as a source, so keep them around!

I'm still awaiting JJS's approval for me to release the resyled subs for everyone. I've asked on IRC, and it seems the mods there do not mind... in fact they thought I had the approval already. I myself thought it was only for Seasons 1 and 2... anyway I'd prefer to play it safe. So is it alright that I release the subs JJS?

Sorry for the delay, the subs for Episode 7 have been restyled. Surprisingly enough there is no list of modifications for these subs, why you ask? There was nothing worth changing as it was pretty good as is. The spelling was perfect, excluding the Romaji for the OP and ED... usually I skip that as I do not know what is or is not the correct spelling for it.

I have not forgotten the subs for Episode Eight, I was thinking of waiting until a bit more work came along for me so I can do a batch release or something... meaning when more episodes are released. Well doing one episode at a time is okay, but when I get into "work" mode I wish there was more to do.

A colorless variant of my subs? Additions Basic? What is that? You mean you would like something without colored text? It is a pity, the main reason these are being done is for myself, yet I am releasing the restyled subs for those who want it. Well, you can restyle the subs however you want, just be sure to give credit for those who have done the work before you..... strange I have a feeling I said this before... lol impossible!
