Character Names and Ranks that DGz-#nanoha will be using in StrikerS (36)

1 Name: Katzbalger : 2007-06-28 03:00 ID:QZU84P21 [Del]

I decided to make this thread in response to this one (http://damagedgoodz.net/board/kareha.pl/1182792823/l50) to clear up some possible misunderstandings and to burn a lot of time, for I am currently extremely bored. :(

The following is a list of Character names and information that I made for the group to use as a translation guide so that (hopefully) we never screw up when it comes to naming. Seeing as it really shouldn't be a big secret file, I might as well publish it. The lack of tabbing abilities will make this a bit painful to read, but the names displayed as follows... (this is gonna be long XD)

Unit Attachment
> Character name [rank / unit position] (device) notes

6th Mobile Division: Long Arch
> Yagami Hayate [Lieutenant Colonel / Commander] (w/ Schwertkreuz)
> Reinforce Zwei [Sergeant Major / Sub-Commander]
> Griffith Rowlan [Warrant Oficer / Adjundant]

6th Mobile Division: Stars
> Takamachi Nanoha [Captain / Captain] (w/ Raising Heart) Call sign: Stars 1
> Vita [Second Lieutenant / Vice-Captain] (w/ Graf Eisen) Call sign: Stars 2
> Subaru Nakajima [Second Private / Forward] (w/ Mach Caliber) Call sign: Stars 3
> Tiana Lanstar [Second Private / Forward] (w/ Cross Mirage) Call sign: Stars 4. Official English name we won't be using: Teana Lanstar

6th Mobile Division: Lightning
> Fate T. Harlaown [Enforcer / Captain] (w/ Bardiche) Call sign: Lightning 1
> Signum [First Lieutenant / Vice-Captain] (w/ Laevantein] Call sign: Lightning 2
> Elio Mondial [Third Private / Forward] (w/ Strada) Call sign: Lightning 3. We care little for him, there seems to be some universal hatred for him too.
> Kyaro Ru Rushie [Third Private / Forward] (w/ Kerykeion) Call sign: Lightning 4. Official English name we won't be using: Caro-Ru-Lushe
> Freidrich [Kyaro's pet dragon] Often called Fried, and somehow gets noted as being Lightning 4, with Kyaro too.

6th Mobile Division: Other members
> Shamal [Doctor] (w/ Klarwind]
> Zafira wow... that's all there is to him. Apparently he's supposed to be Hayate's personal body guard though, not that she needs one as she has an entire unit behind her. Official English name we won't be using: Zafila
> Vice Granscenic [Sergeant] (w/ Storn Raider (the helicopter, JF704))
> Shario Feinino [Second Private] Frequently called Shari
> Alto Krauetta [Second Private] Alto's the blond chick who works with Shario
> Lucino Liilie [Second Private] Lucino's the purple headed chick.

Administration Bureau
> Chrono Harlaown [Admiral / Captain of the Klaudia] (w/ Durandal... I assume)
> Verossa Acous [Inspector]
> Lindy Harlaown [Chief of Liaisons (might have changed since I translated her position from chapter 3 of the manga...)]
> Amy Lamaiter Harlaown [Resigned member] Now Chrono's wife. She has twins already, called Kare and Lia I assume... I'll need to check those names (Chrono wastes no time).
> Leti Rowlan [Admiral last we knew]
> Fawn Cloud [Major / Principle of the TSAB Fourth Training Academy] Seen in the manga. Probably wont appear in the anime though.

108th Battalion
> Genya Nakajima [Major]
> Ginga Nakajima [Sergeant] (w/ Blitz Caliber)
> Rad Caritas [First Lieutenant] That investigator who appears in ep 6. Doesn't seem to do anything though.

St. Monarch Church
(We aren't using Saint Church, as the japanese name for the church can translate to St. Monarch anyway. It sounds better in our opinion)
> Carim Gracia [??? / Leader of the Church Knights] She has a position in the TSAB, but I've yet to work it out. I'll keep you posted. Also, as she's a female knight, we'll title her "Lady", as that's what you do when addressing a female knight in English anyways.
> Schach Nouera [Nun] She confuses me. She's officially a nun, but she acts like a knight.

Bad Guys
> Jail Scaglietti [Doctor] FYI: Jail is actually pronounced Yail
> Lutecia (w/ Asclepius)
> Zest Seeing as he's refered to as a knight, we'll title him "Sir".
> Agito Looks like chibi Enta.

Other Characters
> Vivio If I said more, I'd probably spoil for Loliplaya
> Suzuka Tsukimura
> Arisa Bannings

And that's it for now. There's a lot of characters I don't have the names for yet (the Numbers, and the other TSAB character's who have appeared), but I'll add them when I find them

Thanks for the info, Katzbalger.

Hopefully you didn't break your finger while typing, did you?

Freidrich -> Fried?

Did the e and the i just change now?

*deep fried freidrich... yum <3*

>Elio Mondial [...] We care little for him, there seems to be some universal hatred for him too.

AFAIK, Freidrich and Elio aren't real characters, but merely satellites of Kyaro. I don't mind his presence, since Kyaro is so cute when she's with him (especially in episode 10).

>Carim Gracia [...] She has a position in the TSAB, but I've yet to work it out.

I think I've heard she's a member of TSAB's Board of Directors.
[StrikerS episode 4, ~10:00]

>Schach Nouera [...]

She seems to be Carim's personal assistant.

>She's officially a nun, but she acts like a knight.

Well, the "Church" seems to be an organisation of knights/fighters, so obviously she's one too.
In the manga "A's to StrikerS Phase 02", she offers to go and help Hayate-tachi.

>Zafira [...] Apparently he's supposed to be Hayate's personal body guard though,

I suppose Hayate wanted to have all her knights with her. Their official positions are not really important.

Same goes for the "Stars/Lightnings" partition: there's little to no hint that Fate gives orders to the Lightnings specifically. Basically, the four forwards act as a group, under the supervision of the commander who happens to be available at the moment, or under Tiana's lead if noone else is available.
And Fate, Nanoha, Vita and Signum act pretty independantly, under Hayate's loose command.
And Nanoha is far better than Fate at handling Signum (see episodes 2, 10 and 13).
(Fate is great with kids, but not good as a military commander, unlike Nanoha and Hayate.)

In fact Nanoha has always been good at handling subordinates -- see http://20gp.ovh.net/~example/Triangle_Heart_01_16.00.avi

Lawl typo! Yes, it is meant to be Freid.

>>5

>I suppose Hayate wanted to have all her knights with her. Their official positions are not really important.

Not so true. While it seems there's no real hint that Fate gives orders to Lightning, she would basically relay orders from Hayate to the team. Alos, Fate doesn't tell Nanoha's team what to do in missions, and Nanoha doesn't tell Fate's team what to do.
The on-the-field command goes to the highest ranking person there at the time. You may notice that in ep 11 and 12, Tiana would have let Ginga do the command giving if they had enough time to actually give some, while she only gave tactical support. Regardless of which group/unit/battalion you're in, if a superior gives you an order, you generally have to follow it (unless your units orders conflict).
As for Hayate wanting her knights around... that's a given seeing as she wanted her friends with her too. Also, handling Signum is irrelevant. Signum knows what an order from a superior is, and she'll follow it to the letter. Fate just has trouble issuing orders.

While I'm at it, and still incredibly bored, I might as well add the list of Time-Space Administration Bureau Military ranks I made too. The TSAB ranks are almost parallel to the Japanese Self Defense Force rankings, with some changes. At the moment, I've only really bothered to translate the Ground Defense ranks for the TSAB, so here they are with their Japanese full name and shortened name that's more frequently heard in StrikerS...

Trainee: kenshuusei

Third Private: santou rikushi / santoushi
Second Private: nitou rikushi / nitoushi
First Private: ittou rikushi / ittoushi

Sergeant: rikusou
Sergeant Major: rikusouchou

Warrant Officer: jun rikui / junkui
Second Lieutenant: santou rikui / santoukui
First Lieutenant: nitou rikui / nitoukui
Captain: ittou rikui / ittoukui

Major: santou rikusa / santousa
Lieutenant Colonel: nitou rikusa / nitousa
Colonel: ittou rikusa / ittousa

Brigadier: rikushouho / (have yet to hear the abbreviation.)
Liuetenant General: rikushou
General: rikujou bakuryouchou

You may notice that Brigadier is sitting in the spot that Major General normally sits... the reason why comes from the following statement, "Since Sergeant Major General had previously ranked below a Lieutenant General, the new rank of Major General appeared to create a precedence issue, in that a Major outranked a Lieutenant but a Lieutenant General now outranked a Major General. Within some militaries this oversight has not been modified and continues into the present day." I've taken the liberty to fix this for the translations of Nanoha, and I will fix any other inconsistencies in ranks I see with the Air and Naval defense forces when I work out those military rankings.

Actually, we're both wrong. At the end of episode 10, Nanoha gives orders to Tiana and Subaru, while Fate gives orders to Kyaro and her pets.

> Trainee: kenshuusei

In episode 2, Ginga says she's a "rikushi kouhosei". Is it the same?

11 Name: Katzbalger : 2007-06-29 02:09 ID:QZU84P21 [Del]

>>10
Kenshuusei is apparently the official Japanese word for military trainee... Rikushi Kouhosei translates from the top of my head to Ground Defense Student. I should probably use the later but to be honest, it's only a slight wording difference, so i shan't bother about it.

Actually its more of a case that Windows has rebelled against me (I own a CD key... I just don't have the fucking CD, why can't windows get that through their fucking thick skull?) and the network card is rebelling with it (if i install all the wireless applications it wants, it'll change the logon style to the old '98 way of doing things... but I'm not the only one using it and i NEED the switch users option. Fucking wireless card disables it).

Yeah... I need a new machine. Fucking Dell.

I've always known 'sergeant' as 'gunso' and 'major' as 'shousa'. Is there some odd difference between JSDF ranking nomenclature and direct translations of english ranks?

19 Name: Fabien : 2007-06-29 20:28 ID:D2Xk4hJx [Del]

Definitely. You should install a cracked XP, even if you have bought an official licence.

Oh yea. How about a cracked Vista now?

My laptop ('98 model, Win98SE) won't take in WinFLPC ;^;, so I can't install much, as well as 100kb/s download speed...

Anyone use WinFLPC around here?

21 Name: Katzbalger : 2007-06-29 21:46 ID:QZU84P21 [Del]

Gunsou and Shousa were the ranks for sergeant and major during and before world war 2. After world war 2, Japan was stripped of its military by the UN (read: America) and then created a Self Defense Force. Rank names changed as well.

>>19
That's what I've done. Installed the crack, then tried to put the new and uber license key on so I can keep the machine up to date because it needs to be (work related). Problem is, windows isn't seeing my machine as the same machine anymore... it's fucking annoying. As for the custom made machine part, this thing has only 5 parts that are original. The rest have made way for better, more custom parts (including the monitor, keyboard and mouse).

Always wait at least 2 years and at least 1 service pact before installing something from microshit..

What's Griffith role exactly?
When Hayate is not in her armchair, does he take command, despite having a lesser rank than Nanoha or Vita?
Or does he just manage the staff in that room (Shari and co)?

It seems that Hayate's call sign is "Long Arch zero", while Shari's is "Long Arch one".

Griffith is Hayate's Adjundant. Military assistant in other words. He helps with reports, organizing troops and will relay orders. He's low rank actually surprised me, but then again, we have second in command Reinforce Zwei who'd even lower ranking than Griffith.

30 Name: Fabien : 2007-07-01 01:11 ID:D2Xk4hJx [Del]

So, in the event of Hayate being unavailable, who will take command? Nanoha, since she has the second highest rank?

31 Name: Shiju : 2007-07-01 03:03 ID:jsXaGQkV [Del]

well if they follow the military model (anyone actually in the military feel free to correct me)...

chain of command should go:
Commanding officer (CO)
executive officer (XO)
Department heads (I.e. maintainence(sp?), security, service etc. )

as far as I can tell Fate and Nanoha are department heads
Fate-> Investigation
Nanoha-> Training

Hayate is the CO but their XO is still in question.

32 Name: Katzbalger : 2007-07-01 03:38 ID:QZU84P21 [Del]

Rein is supposidly the XO. Hence her being the Sub-commander

>Zafira [...] he's supposed to be Hayate's personal body guard

In episode 14 we are reminded that he is truly a guardian beast :-D
Well, at least there's a little progress: in A's 04, he had to fold the blanket himself...

34 Name: Katzbalger : 2007-07-11 02:17 ID:QZU84P21 [Del]

starlightSkyz PMed me in IRC wanting to know what rank this Gaiz person's rank is... I was looking though the JSDF ranks and what do you know.. there is no Chujo in there! Turns out that Chujo and Taisho are from the Japanese Imperial Military, which was disbanded after WWII because the Americans didn't like them. So yay for me! In Nanoha, we're using ranks from multiple eras!

-_-;;

Anyways, here he is:
Administration Buerau
> Regius Gaiz [Liuetenant General / ???] Aparantly there's more info about him... I'll get it later.

35 Name: Wild Goose : 2007-07-30 12:33 ID:Wkror7m+ [Del]

The old WW2 ranks are, IIRC, used to refer to foreign military ranks and such.

For some reason known only to themselves, the Maritime Self Defense Force apparently stuck with the old-school ranks, (mayber because they had less loss of honor and the like compared to the army?). Thus, they still use Shouii, Chuii, Taii, Shousa, Chuusa, Taisa and the like.

Rein's equivalent position in a US/NATO unit would be that of Senior Non Comissioned Officer (SNCO) or Non Comissioned Officer In Charge (NCOIC) (nomeculture depending on where you are and which branch.)

In terms of being XO, I'm not quite sure that Rein is Hayate's XO; from what I observe and understand, she's fulfilling the Chief of Staff role, which means that she's the paperwork administrator who makes sure that Riot 6 runs smoothly so that Hayate can concentrate on the important stuff. However, as in most militaries, if the Sergeant Major tells an enlisted to do something, the Enlisted listens. The CO is God, and the Sergeant Major is his prophet.

Also, depending on which military you are, Sergeant Major and Warrant Officer are almost level in terms of rank and authority; for instance, a British Army Sergeant Major is really a Warrant Officer (but adressed as Sar Major because of tradition and the fact that Sergeant Major > all). In the US system, Warrant Officers are part of and outside the normal officer channels, since they're normally enlisted who've been specially promoted (typically as helo pilots, such as in the Vietnam war, which had a large number of Warrant officer helo pilots). The original term for warrant officer, however, came because 1) they had a warrant of service instead of a comissioning letter, 2) in the British Army, they were the guys who brought along the arrest warrants. (Like the Enforcers, I guess.)

Also, IIRC, isn't Vice a First Sergeant?

Also, maybe it's just me, but I always thought that Long Arch One referred to Riot 6 HQ, not just Shari... Shari just answers because she's the commo officer.

If it were Long Arch Actual, on the other hand, I could see it being used for Hayate. In the US Army, tagging on Actual at the end of a callsign means that Da Boss is present and listening in.

36 Name: Foton : 2007-08-04 13:04 ID:wPdJyrt5 [Del]

Eeermm...the way I understand it,

The TSAB is broken into the Naval Force (Central Force which governs the world; the owner of Arthra/Asura, which explains the JMSDF rank designation), while there is a Ground Force in Mid-Childa (which, respectively, uses JGSDF ranks). Regius belongs in the Ground Forces (which, interestingly, has SEELE-like superiors...)

Correct me if I'm wrong.
