Oh, I didn't know that. I based my comment on the fact that Funimation has been the only company that expressed interest in picking up Geneon titles.

also TRSI justed picked up Maria-sama a show that geneon expressed intrest in around the time they got rozen, higu, and nanoha.........

looking at the VA for nanoha, her other roles were mainly with geneon, and the only one not was for a bandai license....

I think this is a good thing. One of the main reasons I can't stand dubs is that the same actors are in EVERY SINGLE ONE so all their characters sound the same. That and I think they all lack the emotion of their Japanese counterparts but I'll try hard to avoid a sub/dub war :)

I hate dubs......but who knows.....maybe I'll get a nice surprise.

This is called the "ADV effect"

One thing I really don't like in dubs is how they butcher the character's names. If they start calling Nanoha "Nicol" or Fate "Flora" (I can't think of a really American female name that starts with 'F' :p), then it's over. If they do manage to keep the original names, they have to pronounce it in English. I remember in CCS how they called Sakura "SakURRRA"... argh that gave me goosebumps.

How could you mispronounce 'Fate'?
And Nanoha is quite easy, and helps keep the joke of Vita's mispronounciation in A's intact.

Whoa, that's pretty insane. I knew most of them from back when they were amateur voice actors and doing fandubs and the like ;) Marianne and Julie are the only people on that list I haven't heard of and Kaiji I've heard of because he's a friend of a friend. Regardless, I am so proud of them!

I digress, though, because my entire comment here is just to say to those people that are worried about the quality of the dub voices -- believe you me they are just as committed to good dubs as you guys are. =)

Regardless, I watch the dubs to at least see how the dub goes. And 9 out of 10 times I like the dub in and of itself. But compared to the original language it usually fails. The ONLY time so far that I liked a dub better than the original was Solty Rei. And it wasn't the script (due to Funi's "creativity"), but I was so impressed by the VAs work, especially Solty's.

For reasons I shouldn't have to explain, Japanese tends to fit the emotional range and dialogue of animes better than English does. In addition, since we're accustomed to English, we can tell right away when someone's overacting or underacting - but for all we know they could be doing the same in the original and it just doesn't automatically sound fake as hell to us.

Well, it's a bit different. Dub lovers actually watch the dubs, so they can legitimately say they liked the dub.

Most dub haters don't watch dubs on principle, yet still bash them. How can you know a dub is horrible if you've never listened to it? That makes their opinion inherently 'wrong' because it's based on nothing but a stereotype. If they watch a dub and then go "Man, that dub sucked" then that is a valid opinion.

I don't know which category you fall into DmonHiro, but it sounds like you've seen your fair share of dubs, so you're far better than those 'hate it on principle alone' people.

Well..I HAVE some really good dubd. Mobile Suit Gundam Wing, Golden Boy, Record Of Lodoss War OVA, Rurouni Kenshin OVA and Nightmare Campus (talk about your anomaly...this is a hentai) are much better in english.

Also...bashing something on principle.....is dumb. It's like people saying that X series sucks when they didn't even see it. How do you know it sucks then, genius?

Anyways, considering the fact that they continued the subbing and are doing the dubbing, it must mean some one will pick it up eventually. I mean, if there was no chance, why would they waste time and money working on it?

dubs do suck but depends on what company does the dubs and the voice acters they just dont have the same exspreson as the origanles or story line to tell the truth i try to say away from dubs as much as possable just because 9times out of 10 they will cange it from the origanl story line that is in the jap verson ok but hopefully they wont f**k this one up coz this is one of my favrate shows

It took me a few years, but gradually by watching enough Japanese-audio anime I started to learn how to detect a shitty performance by an actor or actress in the "holy" original language.

Since I saw the hideous official UK dub of KO Beast Century several years ago (and the aural scars still exist to this day), I've sworn to never watch another dub ever again. Therefore I won't be bothering with this dub of Nanoha (dubs are just for those too lazy/illiterate/both to read subtitles). The only English voices that are justified in this are of course, Donna Burke (Raging Heart)...

When an anime is dubbed, we've probably already watched it subbed -- with the Japanese voices. Even if the American voices are good, getting used to seeing the same characters with new voices needs an effort, and pretty much no benefit.

And even if you've never watched an anime, and have the choice between Japanese voices and English voices, the Japanese seiyuus have a big edge over the Americans: the seiyuus and the author are both Japanese, so they share the same mindset, and they work together.

Just because you saw one bad dub from the era where most dubs were bad, doesn't mean all dubs, especially modern ones which are completely faithful, are bad. That's like saying that Animejunkies subs were bad, so therefore every fansub group is just as horrible.

Thats not completely false. There are some people that actually enjoy the english voices more. Pure and simple, there's no problem there. But many will ACTUALLY admit that they are too lazy to read subtitles/the subtitles move to fast. Those people ARE too lazy/illiterate.

That's what the words "litterate" and "illiterate" are about.

In my case, there's no more effort in reading than in listening. And reading is far faster than speaking. When a character needs four seconds to say a sentence, I need less than one second to read it. So 80% of the time, I don't need to focus on anything.

Therefore I believe subtitles are for lazy people like me, who like to focus/do something only 20% of the time.

Well of course you can read subtitles faster, because the whole line of dialouge appears on the screen the instant the character opens their mouth.

I was talking about being unable to focus on the little text at the bottom of the screen because I'm falling asleep. Doesn't help that Japanese is a soothing langauge and only puts me to sleep faster (unless it's an action title).

Anyways, saying some one is illiterate is saying that they can't read. As such, saying "dub watchers are illiterate" is like saying "dub watchers are too stupid to be able to read."

Anyways, you only watch subs? Fine. Great. There is absolutely no reason why you have to go out of your way to bash dubs and those who watch them. We live in an era of multiple audio tracks. Why can't we all co-exist?

I don't really think they will change the names of the characters in the English dubs since well, Nanoha is part of the original title the anime was given, "Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha." If they did they change the name then Funimation will definitely be sued by the original creator for butchering his/her series. On the other hand, I guarantee that Fate's name won't probably change since its pretty easy to pronounce. The only thing I'm worried about is whether they keep the voices of the Mid-Childa weapons, (i.e Raising Heart, Bardiche, Durandal, etc...) since it is originally english but if they keep it, it may sound a bit like teachers teaching elementary students. As for the Belka-type weapons, (i.e Levantine, Graf Eisen, etc..) they either put subs or they try dubbing it in english but it may also confuse watchers of which one is Mid-Childa or which one is Belka-type.

I don't really think I have a problem with the English cast since I know for sure Cristina Vee will definitely do an awesome job as Nanoha. As for the rest of the cast, good luck~!

Anyways, there was never a chance that it was going to be 'butchered,' as Geneon never did stuff like that. Also, there were no plans on a TV run, so there's no need to 'Americanize' it.

They did indeed recast the devices. Which was a given really. It's not like Pokemon where they only say one word (or variation of that word). Now they'll speak PROPER english. Honestly, I must question Raising Heart and Bardiche's original voice actors. How badly did they fail elementally school english? Even if the script is written that way, they should atleast be able to fix it.

I dunno what they'll do with Graf Eisen and the others. Maybe they will still speak German.

Just so people know, voice actors in most cases have zero say in what their dialogues are. Dialogues are written in a completely separate place. Voice actors take a look at it, and see that it's complete Engrish. Whatever. They walk in to a studio and record it all, get paid, and that's it.

I don't claim to know exactly how it all works but I do know their voice acting definitely does not reflect their English skills.

i go to meet the VA for raiging heart & Signum (same Person, Bailey Chawick) and i was in Signum Cosplay, so we had a total moment of fangasim.... she siad they finnished it a coupple of monts ago... also, anyone else notice that most of the VA's are from animeTV? imagines Jhonny young-bosh (voice of ichigo from Bleach) as yuuno... BU-WAHAHA!!! also... i think i saw the cover art... not bad... also, it's supposed to come out in november at $60. i'm gonna buy it ^^
